Thanks for the help … Thanks for the help.
The outside did not need turning and therefore making it shiney first cuts off a finished product. This brass rod is pretty dull to start with.
It can tarnish later for all I care, but I want it looking good to ship.
It’s really not that visible in the finished product anyway.
If you have ever turned things on a wood lathe, this is where I learned to polish using varied grits of sandpaper. Think turned pens.
@hammar63 It really … @hammar63 It really depends on the material, say steel it will rust if you sand down the finish on top of it. If it is aluminum, or brass which don’t rust then you can use sand paper to make it nice and shiny then using Slivero on it to make it last.
At our school it … At our school it was absolutely forbidden to even come near a lathe with sandpaper, and now some 30 years later I still don’t use it.
I think we have the … I think we have the same lathe (seems a certain base machine is sold under several different names). Wondering, what strength motors did you use for the CNC conversion?

I didn’t use a kit as such, but did use some plans available online.
Check out CNC Zone.
You can find all the info you need there.
Thanks.
Not on brass. I … Not on brass. I don’t even use coolant when doing steels. I just apply as needed with a squirt bottle.
I have built an new lathe now though. It doesn’t use coolant either. I only use coolant on my mill.
