How would using a 1.5 meter length of pipe in conjunction with the wrench help to free the bolts?

A mechanic is attempting to repair a high compression pump but is having difficulty in freeing the pump housing bolts using only a small pipe wrench. How would using a 1.5 meter length of pipe in conjunction with the wrench help to free the bolts?

Slide if over the handle. The added length gives extra leverage.

Will a tub drain wrench still work if the cross is partially broken?

Posted on July 10th, 2010 by admin in wrench | 2 Comments »

I’ve never used a tub drain wrench before but before I run out to get one, will it actually fit flush along the edge of the drain? There is still about 1/4" of the basket still left per arm.
Thanks

depending on the damage i would say yes…..sounds like you are removing the tub drain at the bottom ? the dumbell as its called has 4 teeth that should grab the drain….. worst case, you can actually slowly cut it out with a mini saw………..

How do you make an open end wrench?

Posted on July 7th, 2010 by admin in wrench | 4 Comments »

I would like to learn how to make wrenches my first one will be an 11/16 open end wrench. I would like to make tools at my home as a hobby.

Unless you are willing to invest in some heavy duty equipment I suggest you find another hobby. As the Doc says these kinds of tools are drop forged. Read up on what’s required for that process and I think you will take up stamp collecting! Or maybe woodworking. Wood is much easier to work with than molten steel!

What is that allen wrench-type key called that unlocks bedroom doors?

Posted on July 4th, 2010 by admin in wrench | 3 Comments »

I have those doorknobs that have the little holes in the middle, where you unlock it with some sort of allen wrench. However, I know that’s not what it’s called, as it has a flatheaded end. Could someone tell me what it’s called, so I don’t feel stupid at the hardware store? Thanks.

What you are looking for is sometimes called an "emergency entry key".

If the lock locks with the turn of a small button on the inside, the key will be as you described (a small flat head) which essentially turns that button back. If the lock locks when you push a small button in, the emergency kill is essentially a "poke" tool which pushes the button back out.

If you really want to sound fancy at the hardware store, first find the brand of your knobset (it’s probably Kwikset- look on the edge of the door). And say: "I have a privacy function Kwikset knobset, do you carry spare emergency entry keys?"

It looks like an adjustable wrench with yellow electric marks on it. I’m not sure what it is. I hope someone knows.
I see its sponsered by Gillete, but is that supposed to be a razor? doesn’t look like a razor.

They are sponsored by Gillette.

Crank="To Turn Over!" In the main Fuse/Relay Box by the Battery Check the Main Fuse & Ingnition Fuses, Check to see if you Burned Out the Starter Solenoid. Check to see if you shorted out the Fueible Link to the Alternator!
